Here’s what people are saying about the book:
• Time magazine’s website ran a Q & A with me on June 27 about what makes Brooklyn’s food scene so darn special. (The answer? Plenty!) Reporter David Kaufman and I chatted about underground restaurants and amateur cooking competitions.
• The New York Times: Yep, the book had a write-up in the print edition’s Dining and Wine section, in Florence Fabricant’s weekly Food Stuff column on June 16. Fabricant (or FloFab, as she is often called in these parts) describes the book and says, among other things, that “the book offers plenty to discover, including temporary markets, events and pop-up and underground restaurants. “
• On July 29, The Lost Girls World wrote what can only be described as a glowing review. Thanks ladies! Check out their travel website, inspired by the book they wrote on their “quarter-life crisis”-inspired trip-around-the-world. Many young women will find their story, their book, and their travel page inspiring. After all, who else is encouraging 20-something women to take the time to explore the planet before life makes breaking away more difficult?
• Metro New York also did an interview with me, and they focused on where to go when you’re sightseeing in Brooklyn. They asked where to go after Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and I suggested James (shown).
• Canada’s Fashion magazine, which has been compared to American Elle magazine, ran this write-up on their blog about how they would have been lost in Brooklyn without the book. (Aw, shucks.)
• NonaBrooklyn: Check out the write-up from June 15 in this new Brooklyn-based blog.
• Luxist: A profile of the book ran on Luxist.com on June 15.
• Check out this 6/14 piece in The New York Post . It also ran in The Brooklyn Paper,. The story is a profile of some of the best, or most interesting, places in Brooklyn, and includes a photo with Eton Chan of Eton in Carroll Gardens, where they serve shaved ice (pictured).
• Galley Slaves: Check out this blog post on the Washington, DC based Galley Slaves blog on June 9.
• Grub Street: New York magazine’s website ran this round-up of new NYC books on their Grub Street blog on June 2. The round-up included the an upcoming cookbook on manly cupcakes as well as the new Frankies cookbook (shown), which is based on the menu of the Carroll Gardens restaurant which is, not surprisingly, also profiled in Food Lovers’ Guide to Brooklyn.
Several publications have also done giveaways of the book:
• The Charlotte Observer is doing a book giveaway—you can win your copy here by identifying a certain someplace on a map.
• Time Out New York is doing a book giveaway—you can win your copy here by answering questions about Nathan’s.
Also, there have been radio and TV segments about the book:
• On July 22 I spent some time with the lovely and talented Rachel Wharton of Edible Brooklyn on her show “Brooklyn Eats.” There was also a surprise guest, Ava Chin, of The New York Times, who likes to forage for berries in Prospect Park. Sounds like fun to me! Now if only the peak of wineberry and raspberry season didn’t coincide with wicked temps in BK…
Rachel also wrote about our chat on the Edible Brooklyn blog.
• On the Menu radio with Ann and Peter Haigh did a radio show on July 18 on local eating sustainable local eating, and they had me on the program, too. I’m about 45 minutes in, so do fast-forward if you’re short on time. That said, Michel Richard is on the show, too, and he was a pioneer in sustainability. He is certainly interesting when he starts talking about the history of farming, as well as when he provides real-life techniques for how you can use better practices in your own home. You can hear more of On the Menu’s shows with chefs and food writers at onthemenuradio.com.
•
On Monday June 7, I had the pleasure of chatting with the lovely Cathy Erway on her Heritage Radio Network show, Let’s Eat In, about the recent release of my book, Food Lovers’ Guide to Brooklyn, which hit book shelves last week. Did you miss the radio show? That’s okay—you can listen to us banter on about Brooklyn and food on the station’s website.
