Announcing the release of Food Lovers’ Guide to Brooklyn, a book that traces one Brooklyn-based writer’s exploration of restaurants, markets, and food producers (Globe Pequot Press, June 2010). Food and travel writer Sherri Eisenberg visited 700 restaurants and food stores and featured only half of them in this first edition. From the twelve-taco day to an afternoon that included six jerk chickens (and three patties), she tasted everything that Brooklyn had to offer and culled the list down to the best in every neighborhood, and every type of cuisine. The result? The best restaurants in Brooklyn, all in one handy book.

This book takes you neighborhood by neighborhood through New York City’s hottest borough, exploring the tried and true icons as well as the outposts of New Brooklyn Cuisine. In addition to the best restaurants, you’ll learn about markets, food stores, and local producers. With maps and subway directions, the book offers everything you need to set off on your own. Some of Brooklyn’s most interesting new food entrepreneurs have also contributed recipes to the book, so you can duplicate some of your favorite Brooklyn Flea dishes at home.

On Friday, I did a photo shoot with local photographer Stefano Giovannini at Eton, a fantastic dumpling-and-noodle bar in Carroll Gardens that also serves authentic Hawaiian-style shaved ice. The shoot was for The Brooklyn Paper, so watch for the story next week!

A new coffee house opened in Brooklyn Heights on Tuesday. In some neighborhoods, this would be no biggie. But in sleepy Brooklyn Heights, it’s definite cause to celebrate. Best of all, they’re selling some of the best locally made foods—McClure’s Pickles, Kumquat Cupcakery mini cupcakes, and Early Bird granola. Check out my article on Crop to Cup in Brooklyn Based.
